JUNIOR KIMBROUGH / Sad days, Lonely nights [1994]

"Fans of Dion's previous acoustic blues album Bronx In Blue will certainly want to check out his new CD: Son Of Skip James. Sticking to a similar formula as that aforementioned record, this time around we're treated to a broader palette of musical instruments to help flesh out the the sound of the tracks within. Here, harmonica, organ and piano--both electric and acoustic--spice up the guitar and percussion backing to great effect. Highlights include a fairly straight cover of Chuck Berry's "Nadine," one of the few tracks on the album that strays slightly from the traditional blues format; "My Babe"--written by Willie Dixon and made famous by Little Walter--with its infectious riff; a stripped-down take of Bob Dylan's "Baby, I'm In The Mood For You," which Dion himself first recorded for Columbia in 1965; and a searing, dueling-acoustics version of Robert Johnson's "If I Had Possession (Over Judgment Day)," probably my own personal fave on the CD!
Another surprise here is The Thunderer--a song based on a Phyllis McGinley verse that tells the story of Catholic Saint Jerome, the man who "translated the Bible." It has the same melodic feel as some of Dion's best work, primarily due to a tasteful--almost 70's style--electric piano backing. And, for those who might normally bristle somewhat at the thought of a record that contains an overt religious stamp or two (i.e. usually me!), fear not, it all works here, standing side-by-side with the broader themes of faith and redemption that permeate the framework of the blues in general. Furthermore, it's simply another side of the same artist who previously recorded a string of gospel albums during the 1980's.
Special mention needs to be made once again regarding Dion's (underrated IMO) acoustic guitar playing and timeless vocals. His finger-picking is front and center on songs such as Tommy McClennan's "I'm A Guitar King," while his overall range and effortless phrasing show him to be as vocally nimble as ever--bending, turning and soaring at every curve with the greatest of ease! At age 68, he's showing no signs of wear or tear.
Overall, an even stronger record than the Grammy® nominated Bronx In Blue, with richer colors and more variety. Highly recommended!"- By David R. Modny

When Dion DiMucci was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Traditional Blues category for 2006's Bronx in Blue, an excellent collection of blues standards, it was an official affirmation that he was "back." In truth, he'd never left, and had been recording all along. He issued a stellar follow-up in 2007's Son of Skip James, a collection of revelatory blues covers and fine new material. The third album in this blues trilogy is Tank Full of Blues. Recorded in a trio setting, Dion produced the album, wrote all but two selections, and played the hell out of all the guitars on it. Tank Full of Blues is a slippery, street-smart, utterly inspired album of blues and roots rock tunes that are free of nostalgia and drenched in history. Truth be told, any of the current era's bluesmen would be hard pressed to come up with lyrics near as profound as those found the in the harrowing "Ride's Blues (For Robert Johnson)." The track offers a new myth about the great bluesman; it delves deep into spiritual matters while addressing the terror that lies in the heart of anyone lost to her or himself. There's a redemptive twist that's as surprising as it is free of cliches. The meld of acoustic and distorted snarling electric guitars tells its own story -- the story of the blues itself -- to underscore the narrative. The title track, offered in swaggering Chicago blues style, offers a familiar and bitingly humorous tale of the life of an itinerant musician to be sure, but in a larger sense, also speaks to the conflicted nature of the human heart. "Two Trains" is a beautifully executed medley of Muddy Waters' "Still a Fool" and Johnson's "Ramblin' on My Mind." "My Michelle" pays tribute to Jimmy Reed's enduring musical influence and sense of humor. The strutting, updated rockabilly in "I'm Ready to Go" lays out Dion's sense of purpose in this world and the next. Finally, in "Bronx Poem," a spoken word piece that closes the disc, Dion speaks the unvarnished truth about where he's been and, perhaps even more bravely in this cynical age, where he stands -- without flinching. He possesses a rhyme skill set that would make any rapper jealous. Accompanied by his own haunting guitars and Robert Guertin's quietly shuffling drums, Dion celebrates humanity in the light of his spiritual convictions. In doing so, he comes full circle to meet himself as a street corner poet in the 1950s, and reveals his wisdom as the result of his experiences in the past and the present. He has no need to romanticize or apologize; he remains the keen-eyed, tender-hearted observer he has always been. Tank Full of Blues may be the late entry in a catalog of great work by Dion, but it stands with his best recordings. In fact, it is the album he's been waiting an entire career to make. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

FIRST AID KIT / The Lions Roar [2012]

First Aid Kit.

"Those already familiar with First Aid Kit may be shocked by the portent in the title of their second album, The Lion's Roar. For a duo so built on understatement, it's a statement of its own volition – words which suggest something bigger, bolder, and stronger. From the reflections of Blue, the influence of the Swedish sisters' dream producer Mike Mogis (best known for his work with Bright Eyes) becomes apparent.
Still pared down but clearer, the sweet mimicking between bass and xylophone feel more ominous than decorative.Johanna and Klara Sodenberg's close harmonies charm unaffectedly, pitched in the mix like the faint voices of songbirds echoing through a woodland scene. And, lyrically, there's a mix of gloom and lilt in the perfect order and proportion; in spite of Conor Oberst's involvement, there's no stagnation, no lack of positivity and certainly no halting moments of impenetrable self-reflection.
The voices gallingly cry "I go from nowhere to nowhere / Searching for the key" on Dance to Another Tune, the most mournful of The Lion's Roar's 10 songs. Written like a series of proverbs, it has the unique gift of being accessible and extravagant. First Aid Kit are now a band rather than a duo, and the gorgeous harmonies benefit from a more serious direction and sometimes sweeping orchestration." / REVIEW on http://www.bbc.co.uk/

PHANTASIA / Phantasia [1971-72]

I talk to the moon
The moon talks to me
I talk to the moon
No one else will talk to me

I try helplessly
I try to get along
I try hopelessly
Seems I don't belong
The world turns in pairs
People two by two
If you don't have someone
What are you to do

I talk to the moon
The moon talks to me
I talk to the moon
No one else will talk to me

Do you even hear me
When I talk to you
Do you even want to me
I know I want you
Still I'm left all alone
No one for me to kiss
I know It's strange to you
You probably won't believe this.

I talk to the moon
The moon talks to me
I talk to the moon
No one else will talk to me

REVIEWS/
"UK-influenced folk/psych/prog-rock with strong, heartfelt vocals and long fuzz excursions. The band obviously put a lot of work into this totally pro-sounding affair, and it's strange that no label picked them up. Here's a comment from Phantasia member Bob Walkenhorst: "My first high school band was Phantasia, 1970-71. We were heavily influenced by early King Crimson and Moody Blues. Considering how ignorant we were, we did some pretty good stuff. We recorded several tracks at Damon Studios in Kansas City in 1971."

"Reissue of US psychedelic ultra rarity recorded 1971/72. The original albums (a complete one and a one-sided) are legends for all psychedelic/garage collectors, only 25 copies pressed of each -- not many people have the pleasure of having seen a copy. The music is creeping slowly and sensitively in your mind, whether stoned or not ö it takes you wherever you want. Those are the complete sessions, 55mins in mastertape quality presented the first time to the public. One of the best Psychedelic albums, playing in the same league as Fraction, Music Emporium, Hunger, Mystic Siva, Damon. Later the band changed into Trizo 50. Unbelievable that this extremely talented band didn't make it!!!"

MICHAEL KIWANUKA / Home Again [2012]
